A CHARLES II GILT-BRASS MOUNTED EBONY EIGHT DAY TIMEPIECE TABLE CLOCK WITH PULL QUARTER REPEAT AND ALARM THOMAS TOMPION LONDON. CIRCA 1675/80 CASE: of Tompion Phase I design, with foliate-tied faceted gilt-brass handle to cushion-moulded top applied with silk-backed foliate-cast gilt-brass mounts, rectangular glazed side panels, the front door with finely pierced replaced sound fret to the top rail and applied escutcheons to the side rails, with secret drawer to lower rail of dial mask, on replaced block feet DIAL: 6 in. square gilt-brass latched dial with scored line border, winged cherub mask spandrels, silvered and engraved chapter ring with sword hilt half hour markers, finely matted centre with engraved and silvered alarm setting disc, signed along the lower edge 'Tho Tompion Londini Fecit', blued steel hands, the restored hour hand with alarm set indication tail, the minute hand replaced, the alarm wound through the upper right spandrel MOVEMENT: with six ring-turned and latched pillars, single chain fusee, verge escapement with pear-shaped bob, pull-quarter repeat on large and small bell via Tompion's system of pivoted steel arms with cords with ivory pulls to each side, the back plate with scored line border, engraved with foliate scrolls, flowers and thistles, signed within engraved rectangular cartouche 'Tho Tompion Londini Fecit'; crank winding key, case key 12¾ in. (32.5 cm.) high, handle down; 9½ in. (24 cm.) wide; 6 1/3 in. (16 cm.) deep
