The elimination of the forcing-cone reduces recoil and the use of thin-walled cartridge-cases allows for wads and shot-loads suited to the increased bore-diameter. In effect, the 'chamberless 12-gauge' is the equivalent of a normal 10-gauge. This leads to some confusion, but all breech-loading shotguns are known by the nominal gauge of their cartridge and not by the actual diameter of their bore. Thus, a 12-gauge 'chamberless' gun will chamber any 12-gauge cartridge (of suitable length), but only a thin-walled cartridge-case is likely to produce optimum ballistics
