Beschreibung:

A cased Edwardian sterling silver twin handled punch bowl, London 1903 by Edward Barnards & Sons Of compressed circular form with a shaped everted C scroll and acanthus rim. The handles formed as S scolls with winged bare chested maiden upper sections. The body with embossed decoration of C scrolls, foliate scrolls and flower heads, with a vacant cartouche either side reserved in C scrolls. One with presentation inscription ‘13/25 September 1879 Leonidas & Phrofso Zarifi 13/26 September 1904’. Raised on a domed circular foot, similarly embossed. Gilt interior. Contained with a fitted blue felt lined oak case, with ivorine tag for 'Carrington & Co, silversmiths., 130, Regent St, London, W. Fully marked to bowl underside. Together with a punch ladle with die stamped scroll and shell terminal, London 1904 by Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater. (2) (case with key) Length – 44 cm / 17.5 inches Height – 27 cm / 10.6 inches Weight – 2659 grams / 85.49 ozt Case dimensions – 37.5 x 34 x 29.2 cm / 14.75 x 13.4 x 11.5 inches Leonidas George Zarfi (1840-1926) was born in Constantinople, he married Euphrosyne (George) Nicolopoulo (1857-1933) on the 20th September 1879. He was a banker Banker in Constantinople and Marseille where until his death he headed the banking house Zarifi-Eugenidi with Eustathios Eugenidi. Leonidas Zarifi is among the fifteen bankers who signed an agreement with the Ottoman government in Nov 1879 to ensure sufficient capital, A. Du Velay, Essai sur l'histoire financière de la Turquie : depuis le règne du sultan Mahmoud II jusqu'à nos jours, Paris, 1903, p. 400. He residence at death was 23 Rue Tepi-Bachi, Constantinople, Turkey, but died in Kifisia, Athens. This bowl would have been to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
