Serial no. 9165. .360 - 2 1/4 Black Powder Express. 27 inch Damascus barrels. Smooth flat rib marked J. Purdey 314 1/2, Oxford Street, London - To H.H The Nizam of the Deccan from H.R.H. the Prince of Wales K.G. G.C.S.I. 1876 with spear front sight and standing rear sight marked 50 with two folding leaves marked 100 and 150. Rear sight with platinum lines. Casehardened backaction with Jones-style underlever. Action, backaction locks and sculpted hammers engraved with fine foliate scroll. Non-rebounding locks with stalking safeties. Percussion fences. Finely checkered straight grip stock of highly figured dark walnut. Cheekpiece. Casehardened iron buttplate. Gold oval with the Prince of Wales crest. Sling eyes. Finely checkered wedge-fastened splinter fore-end with horn tip. Two tier oak and leather trunk case with lid marked H.H.THE NIZAM/360 EXPRESS. Gun and accessories in tray and ammunition storage in bottom of case. Brass corners, hinges and lock. Key for lock. Replaced red baize interior lining. Accessories include: brass capper/de-capper, brass bullet fixer, 1 7/8 dram powder measure by Hawksley, 0.370 inch hollow point bullet mould marked 5627 A.H. Steel sizing tool marked Solid/360/1, Steel bullet seating tool, a painted steel bullet sizer, a wood striker box with nipples, strikers and a replacement foresight and a nickel-silver oil bottle by Hawksley. Condition: Fine. Barrels show 70-80 percent browning with areas of thinning near the breech and a few light scratches. Excellent bores with areas of light frosting. Action and locks show 70-80 percent faint case colors. Triggerguard shows 50 percent bluing with losses to tang. Stock shows light markings to an older refreshed finish. Buttplate shows 30-40 percent case colors with the balance a brown patina. Gold oval shows wear to engraving. Fore-end shows slight losses on right-side edge. Case is in very good condition with losses to the finish. Edges show scuffing. Replaced lining in excellent condition. Steel accessories show some spotting. Data: Proof: London, Black Powder. Weight: 7 pounds 12 ounces. Note: The maker's records confirm that the gun was ordered by Buckingham Palace. Also the "Book of Presents, Royal Visits confirms that a "Double pea rifle" by James Purdey was gifted to the Nizam of Deccan. The Deccan was an area that also included Hyderabad.
