A CASED 17-BORE D.B. PERCUSSION SHOTGUN BY THOMAS JACKSON MORTIMER, MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY, LONDON No. 5077, circa 1830-33 With twist sighted barrels signed on the rib, engraved breeches with platinum plugs, long breech tang engraved with panels of scrolls and foliage enclosing an inset gold vacant escutcheon, back-action locks each decorated with scrollwork inhabited by pheasants and signed on a ribbon 'T.J. Mortimer St. James' St.', highly figured walnut half-stock (fore-end cracked) inset with an engraved white metal fillet below the breech on both sides, chequered grip, steel mounts engraved en suite with the locks, the trigger-plate with pineapple finial, and with original brass-tipped wooden ramrod, London proof marks, barrel forger's mark of Thomas Jackson Mortimer: in original fitted brass-bound mahogany case lined in dark blue velvet (patches of light wear and staining, two small compartment walls missing), the lid with brass circular flush-fitting handle and escutcheon, sliding bolt closure, trade label (for the period circa 1824-38), and some accessories including powder-flask and shot-flask. 29 7/8 i n (75.9cm) barrels
