A carved oak and marquetry tester bedstead, English, late 16th early 17th century and later the nine panel tester profusely carved overall with foliate whirls, guilloche and lion masks, the centre panel recessed and with a larger lion mask within a cartouche and ribbed frame, all below a dentil moulded and foliate guilloche and rosette frieze with corner corbels, supported on stiff-leaf carved bulbous gadrooned columns, with Ionic capital and ending an a concave sided socle, the headboard with an upper pair of panels carved with trailing foliage and a central human silhouette between corbels, above a pierced frieze of putti and crowns below scrolls, with polychrome marquetry panels of foliage and birds between lion masks, the central two arcaded panels with bearded figural supports playing instruments, each framing a polychrome marquetry architectural trompe l'oeil panel with swans to the foreground, flanked by angled bearded satyrs and centred with a female figure possibly depicting Eve holding a fruit, with a gadrooned rail and four panels below with guilloche arcade, the side rails with scrolling blind fret-work -- 92in.
