A CARVED GILTWOOD STOOL PROBABLY GERMAN, POSSIBLY WURZBURG, IN THE MANNER OF FERDINAND TIETZ CIRCA 1730 Two legs carved with the head of an entwined serpent and a dragon, upholstered in crewelwork, a branded mark 'FHM', probably an inventory mark, to the underside of the stretcher 45cm high, 66cm wide, 49cm deep This present stool was probably originally upholstered in 'tabouret' form with a loose cushion. The stylisation of the ruffled carving and the central flowerhead of the stretcher suggest a German origin. For a German console table with related dragons carved to the frieze see B von Brigitte Langer, Die Mobel der Schlosser Nymphenburg und Schleibheim, Munich, 2000, pp130-132. Ferdinand Tietz (or Dietz), (1708-1777) was a key sculptor in the rococo period in South Germany, first recorded working at Wurzburg Residenz in 1736. His work displays distinct rockwork carving similar to the carving of the present stool. For a near identical pair of stools see Christie's, New York, Maria Felix: La Dona, 18th July 2007, lot 256, (USD 180,000); and a related banquette, lot 255, (USD 60,000); other related stools sold Christie's, Dublin, Powerscourt: Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, Ireland, 24th and 25th September 1984, lot 444; also Parke Bernet, New York, 21st March 1961, lot 324.
