A CARVED AND PAINTED WOOD BOAT PROW FINIAL 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY Possibly French, the face beneath elaborate scrolling plumed helm, inscribed ink label "19th century French.... barge figure head 1750 ....paid $335" 27cm high, 19cm wide, 23.5cm deep Provenance: Property of Harry Taft Hayward (1868 - 1930) and Edith Wires (1872 - 1962) Skyring House, Worthing, and thence by descent Harry Taft Hayward (1868 - 1930) - cousin to William Howard Taft, 27th president of the United States - and Edith Wires (1872 - 1962) were members of the Boston elite. Their two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Hayward (1906-1976) and Harriet Taft Hayward (1907-1968), lived at Oakwald, Franklin, Massachusetts and were both painted by the artist Sir John Lavery (1856 - 1941); see Christie's, The Scottish Sale at The Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, 6975, 28th October 2004, Lot 152. Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Old losses including to both helmet side wings and to top scrolling feather, Front of base with old repair. Surface abrasions and loss- the painted surface to face luminescing under UV suggesting it may have had old remedial refreshments Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report.
