A brass three-and-a-half inch refracting telescope J.H Steward, London, late 19th century The 47 inch tube with rack and pinion focus adjustment and fitted with 'starfinder', the eyepiece end plate engraved J.H STEWARD, LONDON to circumference opposing friction fitting cap to objective lens, mounted via universal joint onto a column turned upright with telescopic steady-arm and screw rotation adjustment over three hinged brass cabriole supports, in original fitted mahogany box with two eyepiece tubes and paper trade label pasted to inside of lid, the box 78cm (30.75ins) wide. The firm of James Henry Steward is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as trading from several addresses in the Strand, London from 1857 until to well into the 20th century. Other addresses/outlets included 63 St. Paul's Churchyard (1867-80) and 7 Gracechurch Street (from 1893).
