A BIZEN OSAFUNE TACHI MUROMACHI PERIOD (15TH CENTURY), ATTRIBUTED TO TOSHIMITSU BY HONNAMI NARIYOSHI Configuration ( sugata ): with longitudinal ridge line ( shinogi-zukuri ), shallow peaked back ( iori-mune ) and medium point ( chu-kissaki ); length ( nagasa ): 2 shaku , 1 sun , 3 bu (64.6cm.); curvature ( sori ): koshi-zori of 2.2cm.; increase in width of blade ( fumbari ): 0.9cm. Forging pattern ( jihada ): extremely dense and fine wood grain with ji-nie and slight bo-utsuri . Tempering pattern ( hamon ): chu-suguba with scattered, extremely small, isolated points of gonome ; scattered irregularly along the hamon are small clusters of ko-choji , all executed in ko-nie , the width of which remains fairly consistant along the full length except for a small patch of o-gonome on the koshi . Point ( boshi ): small and rounded ( ko-maru ), slightly peaked and with a medium kaeri . Tang ( nakago ). Shape ( keitai ): slender and shortened ( suriage ); file marks ( yasurime ): o-sujikai ; end ( nakagojiri ): squared ( kirijiri ); holes ( mekugi-ana ): two; signature ( mei ): unsigned ( mumei ). Shirasaya . Itomaki no tachi koshirae , the mounts Edo period, 17th century, comprising: a lacquer saya decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a nashiji ground with go-san no kiri mon , and shakudo nanako mounts emblazoned with gold relief san-go-san kiri mon ; a tsuba with the ji worked so that it drops quickly in thickness where it meets the gilt border, forming a slight trough, with points of highest convexity on the surfaces having a shiny rubbed patina--length of koshirae 90.5cm.; length of tsuka 21.8 cm.; tsuba height 8cm., width 8cm., thickness 12mm. Brocade and silk storage bags. Accompanied by an origami by Honnami Nariyoshi, dated Meiji 41 (1908), attributing the blade to Bizen Norimitsu and the mounts to Goto Tokujo (1550-1631).
