Engine no. 930.101 103.412 The all-important beating heart of the legendary and much-admired Porsche 956 racing Coupes was essentially the engine so well-proven by the preceding Porsche 936 sports-prototype racing program. This Type 935 power unit displaced only 2.65-liters yet its air-cooled flat-six cylinder design with twin-KKK turbocharging developed approximately 635bhp – 474 kilowatts for the metrically-minded. The Typ 956 Group C racing Coupe was intended to replace the previously ultra-successful Porsche 935 and 936 models and around this engine the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen based company focused upon building a competition classic which embraced the cutting-edge of contemporary aerodynamic technology. Massive ground-effects underfloor sections were adopted and for the first time Porsche adopted a sheet-skinned aluminum monocoque chassis design to achieve sufficient rigidity to harness the massive aerodynamic forces the body design could generate. Group C racing was a fuel efficiency Formula. Contemporary FIA international regulations permitted a maximum fuel tank capacity of 100 liters, and a maximum of 25 refueling stops during a 24-hour race. The purpose of the regulations was to develop more fuel-efficient engines, and to foster technological innovations which could benefit future road car design. This concept appealed hugely to Porsche and they became one of the first competition-car manufacturers to minimize fuel consumption through the adoption of electronic engine management systems. Turbocharging was preferred to natural aspiration since it offered superior power output adaptable to fuel economy requirements by simple adjustment of the boost-pressure dump valve or wastegate. At 14lbs per square inch boost the Porsche 935-type engine would develop some 580bhp. With the wastegate set to withstand boost pressures of up to 17lbs psi the engine delivered closer to 620bhp. Typically, drivers would run high boost early in a long race to gain track position. Once the pace of their opposition had slackened, or if fuel availability demanded, boost pressure could be eased in order to reach the race finish. This engine is a 935/82 flat-6 cylinder boxermotor featuring twin KKK turbochargers and Behr inter-coolers. Four toothed-belt driven overhead camshafts actuate four valves per cylinder. Displacement of the six cylinders totals 2,649cc. The engine combines air-cooled finned cylinders with water-cooled cylinder heads. Bosch MP Motronic 1.2 engine management is used, offering 620bhp output at 8,200rpm and with boost pressure of 2.2 bar. We understand that this individual engine offered here was used by the Porsche 956 chassis ‘103’ originally run by Preston Henn in 1983 and subsequently in the All-Japan Sports-Prototype race series of 1984, in which it was used in chassis ‘103’ campaigned by Team Trust.
