Serial no. 7325. 12 bore. 26 inch barrels with {Moharaja Raghunath Sarun Sinch Deo Bahadur / Political Chief Sirguja Rajdhani Bisrampur 1900} in gold. Flat one-half inch smooth rib with matted panels at breech and muzzle with doll’s head. Rib marked Holland & Holland 98 New Bond Street and 2. Fixed rear sight marked 50. Spear front sight with white enamel bead. Jones’ patent underlever action with self-closing spring-loaded back-bolt. Action engraved with fine foliate scroll with floral details. Extended upper tang. Dished watertable. Backaction locks with rounded hammers with dolphin heads. Percussion fences. Side clips. Action, barrels and fore-end marked 2. Checkered pistolgrip stock of figured dark walnut. Silver’s type recoil pad with later fine foliate scroll engraved silver base. Cheekpiece. Horn grip cap. Vacant silver oval. Sling loop on barrels and swivel on stock. Splinter fore-end with engraved lever release and metal tip. Condition: Very Good, as partially redone. Barrels show 99% older reblued finish with some spotting, nicks and scratches. Bottom of rear lump shows heavy pitting. Bores show areas of heavy frosting and some very light pitting in grooves. Action shows a silver patina. Locks show 90-95% light case colors. Trigger-plate screw slot shows marring. Underlever bolt head shows pitting. Stock shows and older refinish with nicks, scratches. and areas of raised grain. Checkering shows some refreshed areas. Grip cap shows a chip near the center. Data: Proof: London black powder, 12, 12. Pull: 14 1/4 inches. Weight: 12 pounds 14 ounces. See Illustration. Note: According to the maker’s records the rifle was part of a pair, No. 7324/5 made for Sir H. Thompson in 1882. Presumably the rifle was presented to the Maharaja of Sirguja in 1900. Sirguja was one of the Chota Nagpur feudatory states, which was transferred in 1905 from Bengal to the Central Provinces. It covered an area of over 6000 sq. miles. At the turn of the century there were extensive forests with considerable game including elephants, tigers, bison, etc.
