This slender archive documents the arrival of Lucas Bitter, a young native of Hanover, Germany, to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1859, his subsequent enlistment in the service of the Union, and his death at the battle of Wilson's Creek in 1864. Includes passport and naturalization papers, his enlistment papers, pensions forms, and an 1873 letter from his Captain William Ketteler certifying that Said Louis Bitter had both legs shot off or shattered at the battle and In consequence of the wounds so received he died two days afterwards... In addition there is an 1863 letter in German, and two WWI passes issued to his son as part of Battery E of the 136th Field Artillery while in France in 1918. Condition:Generally Good, with usual folds and separations.
