Lot of 9, including: Printed General Court Martial Orders No. 33, Washington, May 10, 1870, 2pp, regarding the General Court Martial convened at Fort Leavenworth, KS, March 4, 1870, under the supervision of Bvt. Maj. Gen. S.D. Sturgis, for the purpose of trying 1st Lieut. D.W. Wallingford, 7th US Cavalry, for "conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman." Lieut. Wallingford was charged with associating with a "notorious prostitute or lewd woman" in Sheridan, KS, on November 6, 1869. He allegedly took the woman to the Perry House hotel, was kicked out due to her reputation, then took her to the American House hotel under an alias and was seen consorting with her in the public areas of the hotel, "to the scandal and disgrace of the military service." The officer was found guilty and dismissed from the service. Samuel D. Sturgis, the supervisor of the court martial, was a Mexican War and Civil War veteran who was the colonel of the US 7th Cavalry at the time, with George Armstrong Custer serving as his lieutenant colonel. While the defendant of the trial was dismissed and spared from being present at Little Bighorn six years later, Sturgis' own son, 2nd Lt. James G. Sturgis, was present and killed in the battle. Also included are: Printed War Department Circular No. 23, Washington, June 5, 1865, regarding the volunteer soldiers wishing to enlist in the regular army. 1p. Printed War Department General Orders No. 112, Washington, June 10, 1865, regarding the "Right of officers summarily dismissed to demand a trial by Court Martial. 2pp, inked at the bottom of the first page "Rec'd H'dQrs 2 Brig. July 5 1865." Printed War Department General Orders No. 59, Washington, Aug. 6, 1866, regarding the the reorganization of Military Divisions and Departments. 2pp. And five manuscript copies of Special Orders issued by the Office of the Military Superintendant, Bvt. Lieut. Col. Dodge, dated Feb. to April 1869, all relating to Bvt. Maj. D.J. Downing, including excused absences and appointments to acting Military Superintendent.
