71 1799 China Martini M 71/1799 [China]. Martini, M. Het verwoest Sina door den wreeden Tartar: vervaatende de schrickelycke Landt-verdervende Oorlogh, by de Tartars in 't Ryck van Sina aangevangen. Amst., G.J. Valckenier, 1660, (20),168p., engr. title, fold. map, 12 fold. plates, contemp. vellum, 12mo. - The plates partly w. num. creases along folds and occas. w. some minimal (crude) handcolouring; hinges sl. weak; vellum loosening at turn-ins. Covers sl. warped. = Cf. Cordier, Bibl. Sinica p.524ff; cf. Lust 444; cf. Pfister p.261; Lach/ Van Kley, Asia in the making of Europe III, p.1668. Very rare Dutch language edition of Martini's account of the Manchu conquest, based on his De bello tartarico. "The Latin text went through seven editions, and it was translated into nine other European languages (...). Some of the changes in these editions reflect the emphases of the publishers or editors: Gillis Janszoon Valckenier's 1660 Dutch edition, for example, is entitled China devastated by the barbarous Tartar (...). Valckenier faithfully reproduced the original text in his Latin edition, and his Dutch edition is an accurate translation of it. Only the titles and illustrations are new. Half of the plates in each edition depict destruction and bloodshed." (Lach/ Van Kley). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXVIII.
