Beschreibung:

5 vol., first edition, 550 hand-coloured engraved plates by James Sowerby many heightened with gum arabic, occasional offsetting, spotting and some water-staining throughout, first few leaves in each volume excised and mounted on a linen stub, contemporary half calf, rebacked, extremities a little rubbed, 8vo, 1804-17. *** Soweby's first published work on minerology. All the plates were meticulously drawn from actual specimens retained in Sowerby's extensive personal mineralogical collection. Sowerby issued the work in parts and later supplemented it with Exotic Mineralogy (1811-1820). Both became highly influential sources of information at a time when the study of geology and mineralogy was becoming extremely fashionable.
