Just as it had in the preceding decade with the four-cylinder CB750, Honda stunned the world again in the 1970s, introducing the Gold Wing super-tourer and the outrageous six-cylinder CBX1000. Launched in 1978, the latter was not the first six of the modern era, Benelli’s 750 Sei having beaten it by a couple of years, but it was by far the biggest and fastest. Weighing around 550lbs and with 105bhp on tap, the CBX was good for 130mph and scorched through the standing quarter-mile in around 12 seconds. For most owners though, it was not the CBX’s performance so much as its on-road presence that mattered. Even today, few bikes can match it for charisma, visual appeal and, above all, sound. This desirable, twin-shock example of an increasingly collectible classic was purchased by the current vendor on 16th July 2006. The immediately preceding owner had purchased the machine new in 1979, intending to use its engine in a racing car that he was designing. The engine was removed from the bike but was found to be unsuitable for the purpose and both it and the rest of the motorcycle were stored until 2006. A 1979 model first registered in April 1981, the machine retains its original Dunlop Gold Seal tyres and when purchased in 2006 had only five miles recorded on the odometer. The original tax disc (expiry date 31/03/82) was present also. The bike was in ‘as new’ condition, the only parts missing being the wing mirrors and oil cooler pipes. Genuine CBX oil cooler pipes and non-original Honda-pattern wing mirrors were fitted, the engine was serviced and the rocker cover removed to examine the shims. All was found to be in order and the engine was returned to the frame and a new battery fitted. The machine was MoT tested on 21st August 2006, at which time it had covered only 13 miles from new. It was ridden very carefully on the road and since the summer of 2007 has been stored in a heated garage. The current recorded mileage is 404. The oil has been changed (early in 2008) and the bike is presented in mechanically and aesthetically ‘as new’ unrestored condition. Representing an almost certainly unique opportunity to acquire a virtually showroom-fresh CBX, it is offered with expired MoT and V5C registration document.
