Title: 3 scarce 1950s illustrated menus from the Waldorf Astoria Coffee House, and 1 from the Hotel Statler Author: Place: New York Publisher: Date: 1950-1956 Description: 3 Waldorf menus with striking “Mexican peasant” illustrations by Albert de Querquis. 9 x 12”, 3pp. and 4pp. Dated Nov. 19, 1950; Nov. 29, 1956, and one printed notation “4-61”. Drink List / Hotel Statler (NY, ca. 1950) 5.5 x 7.5” Pictorial cover + 10pp. with cover and text color illustrations by Jack Lubin. Born in Italy, De Querquis immigrated from Naples to New York in 1921, studied at the Art Students League, did glass design and and some obscure periodical illustrations , but very little general commercial work. How he happened to design these menus and why, in the 1950s, the upscale Waldorf chose uncommon “Mexican-style” art, featuring dark-skinned men and women of the “peasant class”, is an intriguing mystery. Lot Amendments Condition: Very good. Item number: 271692
