Drink List / Hotel Statler (NY, ca. 1950) 5.5 x 7.5” Pictorial cover + 10pp. with cover and text color illustrations by Jack Lubin. Born in Italy, De Querquis immigrated from Naples to New York in 1921, studied at the Art Students League, did glass design and and some obscure periodical illustrations , but very little general commercial work. How he happened to design these menus and why, in the 1950s, the upscale Waldorf chose uncommon “Mexican-style” art, featuring dark-skinned men and women of the “peasant class”, is an intriguing mystery.
