2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) Full Dress, Mess Dress & Undress Part Uniforms. Comprising two Full Dress scarlet tunics in the rank of Lieutenant (pre 1904), complete with all gold lacing and gilt buttons; two Mess Dress jackets in the same rank complete with all gold lacing, teat buttons etc. A curious Mess jacket of the same period, the body as per the preceding pair but the sleeves are of scarlet light weight linen, perhaps for wear in Hot Climate Stations. An officer’s blue cloth and gold laced forage cap 1857 pattern, the special pattern lace decorated with thistles and with the vandiked outline, buff leather sweatband and scarlet silk lining, period naming on the sweatband, ‘Littledale’ (the leather chin strap an incorrect replacement), contained in a correct pattern japanned tin named to ‘EGM Donnithorne Esqre. Scots Greys’. Two pre July 1881 Heavy Cavalry pattern blue frock coats in the rank of Major complete with correct cuff and collar lace and the single silver bullion rank star, both coats complete with all braiding, olivets, toggles etc (some internal stitching faults), a pre July 1881 blue Patrol Jacket in the rank of Major, again complete with the correct lacing to collar and cuffs, plus the silver bullion rank star, some wear to the silk lining. A Greys gold laced waist belt, (provision for sabre straps only), this complete with the special pattern gilt clasp. A pair of cavalry officer’s white leather gauntlets, a pair of gilt (worn) fused grenade pattern cloak fasteners. Two officers’ navy cloth frock coats, these with ‘turn down’ collars and broad turned back lapels, decorated overall with one inch black mohair braid and five rows of ‘crows foot’ and toggle lacing, (no rank badges) (one toggle missing); possibly Departmental dress. A GVR levee pattern 1897 pattern infantry officer’s sword, the 64cm bright blade with single fuller and etched both sides with scrolling foliage panels, plated hilt incorporating the GVR crowned cypher, wire bound fish skin hand grip, contained in its leather bound metal scabbard. The polished steel shoe and spear point head from a lance, a red/white lance pennon. A 19th century pewter half-pint tankard, a maroon coloured cloth fez (crushed), a modern glengarry with diced band. A blackened wood war club (66cm) to the finial, the hand grip bound in snakeskin(?), it has suffered a massive split and has been glue repaired, various stitching faults but generally in good overall condition (parcel) £1000-1500 Footnote Forage cap marked Littledale presumably belonged to Herbert C. T. Littledale, Captain 20 November 1889, Brevet-Major, 21 May 1884 (noted also as ‘Major, 4th Dragoon Guards). Egyptian Expedition, 1884. Sudan, Battle of El-Teb (severely wounded). Despatches London Gazette 6 May 1884. Medal with clasp & Khedive’s Star. Forage cap tin with plaque to Donnithorne presumably belonged to Edward George Moore Donnithorne, Cornet by purchase 8 September 1865, he had served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, commission 18 December 1861. New Zealand War 1864, action of the Gate Pah and various other engagements, Medal. Lieutenant in the Greys by purchase 3 February 1869. Captain 24 February 1872. Major 1 July 1881. Presumably Hon. Lieutenant Fleming was given much of the above by retiring officers.
