28 February - 8 March 1494/95 LASCARIS, Constantine (1434-1501). Erotemata , Gk. and Lat. [Tr. Johannes Crastonus, O. Carm. (fl. 15th cent.)]-Aldus MANUTIUS (ca. 1452-1515). De litteris graecis et diphthongis. Abbreviationes . -PYTHAGORAS (ascribed to). Carmina aurea , Gk. and Lat. -PHOCYLIDES (fl. 544-41 B.C.) Moralia , Gk. and Lat. -And other, shorter texts. Super-chancery 4° (206 x 147mm). 166 leaves (collation and contents as given for Shuckburgh copy, Christie's 24-ii-93 lot 37, but errata-quire inserted at the end). Greek type 1*:125 cut by Francesco Griffo after Immanuel Rhusotas' hand, with separately cast accents (see Barker ch. 6); roman type 3:108 leaded to 125mm. Settings on a5 r and B5 r agree with Cracherode copy (IA. 24382). 24 lines. 2 woodcut headpieces and initials. (Minor staining at beginning and end, small wormholes mended, repairs to errata-leaves.) PREFACE: Aldus addresses students in two letters. This grammar is to be considered a prelude to the vast labour and expense he will commit to the printing of Greek literature. The text has been set from an exemplar containing numerous corrections made by the author at Messina for two noble young pupils from Venice, Pietro Bembo and Angelo Gabriele. God is his witness that he wants nothing but to dedicate his life to the benefit of mankind, and hard work is what he must expect in this vale of tears. BINDING: Gold-tooled blue straight-grained morocco, signed by Simier at foot of spine, gilt edges, pale velvet liners, vellum flyleaves. PROVENANCE: H.G.B. (English pencil-inscr.) THE FIRST PRODUCTION FROM THE ALDINE PRESS, whose appearance forms one of the most important publishing events of the Renaissance. Fourth edition of Lascaris's grammar, FIRST EDITION of Aldus's own treatise, EDITIO PRINCEPS of Phocylides and the pseudo-Pythagoras. Aldus priced the book at 4 marcelli, the equivalent of one third of a ducat, in his 1498 catalogue (unique copy in BN de France). HC *9924; BMC V, 552; Goff L-68; IGI 5963; Legrand I, 12; Proctor 93-102, pl. XIV; Flodr 240:2 (Phocylides); Lowry 224-25; Murphy 1; Babcock & Sosower 45; Sansoviniana 2; Laurenziana 1; Dionisotti & Orlandi I; In Praise p. 40; R 1:1
