The Mercedes-Benz R129 models were produced from 1989 through to 2001 and were sold under the SL-Class model name before being replaced by the R230 in 2001. The R129 was based on the shortened floorpan of the Mercedes-Benz W124 saloon and featured many innovative details for the time. The fifth generation of the legendary SL series of two-door convertible sports cars featured a fully retractable hardtop that was marketed as the Vario Roof; a first for the SL class, although it had been available on the smaller SLK model since 1997. The flagship models were built by AMG in the form of the SL 55 (a highly tuned version of the SL 500) with each engine individually hand assembled and signed by the technician. This lovely example of the SL 55 AMG is presented in Obsidian Black with Alpaca Grey leather interior; it also enjoys a panoramic glass roof amongst other optional extras. It has only covered a mere 55,000 miles from new with a substantial service history and is in good condition throughout. These luxury sports cars still provide exciting driving, propelled by its fabulous V8 and, with the roof down, it surely still is one of life's great pleasures to drive quickly in the country or relaxing on those long motorway and continental journeys.
