Vespa is a brand of scooter manufactured by Piaggio in Italy; the name translated meaning wasp. It has evolved from a single model motor scooter manufactured in 1946 to a full line of scooters and one of seven companies today owned by Piaggio; now Europe's largest manufacturer of two-wheeled vehicles and the world's fourth largest motorcycle manufacturer by unit sales. From their inception, Vespa scooters have been known for their painted, pressed steel unibody construction, combining a complete cowling for the engine, a flat floorboard providing foot protection, and a prominent front fairing providing wind protection. When Vespa celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1996, more than 15 million of the scooters had been sold worldwide; other companies vied with Piaggio for market share but none have come close to emulating their success. The ET model range remained true to the wasp/aero design principle; being lighter, more aerodynamic, with an automatic gearbox and offering a choice of engines. This Piaggio ET4 Vespa was first registered on 11 th May 2000 with the registered keeper being none other than Sir Stirling Moss. Used by Sir Stirling as his run-around vehicle in central London and at race meetings as his personal paddock transport, this scooter has been in the hands of a private collector for a number of years. The current vendor describes the bike as being in running order and ready to use as desired. Carrying the decals from F1 Legends and the BARC, this scooter represents an opportunity to purchase a rare piece of motor racing history at an affordable price.
