Painstakingly compiled scrapbook of chess games from around the world, from a variety of publications. The 1880s were among the most significant years in the history of the ancient game, as this landmark decade ushered in the first world chess championship (1886), first international correspondence tournament (1888), and first U.S. chess championship (1888). Clippings from a number of publications including the Pittsburgh Telegraph, Newark Sunday Call, Baltimore Sunday News, Philadelphia Times, etc. Various other publications are referenced throughout, including the Brooklyn Chess Chronicle, Chess Monthly, Hartford Times, Milwaukee Sunday Telegraph, British Chess Magazine, Brentano's Chess Monthly, Chess Players' Annual, St. Louis Globe-Democrat, Lebanon Herald, Jamaica Family Journal, London Chess Monthly, etc. Articles include chess problems and solutions, chess correspondence, chess notes, chess chat, chess intelligence, philosophy of chess, chess tournament problems, solutions and key moves, dangers in chess, playing a losing game, chess tournament play and matches throughout the world, blindfold chess matches, biographical sketches, games between great chess masters, chess exhibitions, chess gossip, the mission of chess clubs, etc. The names of noted chess players from the period can also be found throughout. The highly influential writer and chess theoretician Wilhelm Steinitz (1836-1900) is mentioned frequently, as is Paul Morphy (1837-1884), considered by many to be the greatest player of his era and one of the greatest players ever. Other players found here include "celebrated chess player" Samuel Standidge Boden (1826-1882) whose death from typhoid fever is discussed, Polish born American chess master Max Judd (1851-1906), dominant British player Joseph Henry Blackburne (1841-1924) nicknamed "The Black Death", leading German-Polish chess master Johannes Hermann Zukertort (1842-1888), Austrian lawyer and chess master. Philipp Meitner (1839-1910), and many others. The activities of numerous chess clubs and associations also figure prominently throughout, including the Baltimore Chess Association, Manhattan Chess Club, New York Chess Club, Philadelphia Chess Club, Danites Chess Club of Brooklyn, Wilmington [Delaware] Chess Club, chess in New Orleans, chess in St. Louis, Pittsburgh Library Chess Club, Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania Chess Association, Ontario [Canada] Chess Association, London [England] Chess Club, Vienna [Austria] Chess Congress, etc. An absolutely marvelous artifact from a 19th century American chess enthusiast.
