The Volkswagen T25 Syncro is a fabulous piece of Volkswagen history and a truly capable off-road vehicle. First produced in 1985, the VW Syncro was a solid 4X4 addition to the Volkswagen range. The initial prototypes were designed to take part in the grueling African rallies taking place in the 1970's and proved themselves worthy of the task when used as support vehicles during the Paris-Dakar rally. The Transporter Syncro was equipped with the brilliant four-wheel drive system jointly created by VW and the Austrian company renowned for its developments in the four-wheel drive arena, Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Proven vehicles, such as the small Haflinger, the 4x4 or 6x6 Pinzgauer and the Mercedes G-Wagon made VW sure of the fact SDP would be the best partner for their 4x4 Transporter project. Rather than the relatively weak Golf turbo-diesel unit which was fitted as standard, producing only around 70bhp, this Syncro is fitted with a 2.3 litre, 20v, five-cylinder Audi 90 Quattro engine from the same era as the Syncro was built. While the standard spec is 170bhp, this engine has been modified above that with modern injectors, a chipped ECU and an earlier, more powerful 7A exhaust manifold from 1989. Only around 2,100 of these righthand drive Syncros were ever produced, compared to around 41,350 lefthand drive models, so it's quite a find, especially when you factor in the fact that it's a double cab and a 16" model making it even rare. The 16" package was offered by Volkswagen for those who wanted to give their Syncro an edge when it came to its off-road capabilities and includes 16" wheels, bigger front brakes, a rear differential lock and lower final drive ratios, as well as a host of subtler structural and mechanical tweaks. This model was never offered in this country, but one Right Hand Drive Special Edition Jagdwagen (Hunting Car) Crew Cab built as a one-off order for a customer. A righthand drive Syncro 16" Double Cabs is a rare vehicle. Volkswagen only produced around 300 examples in total and a righthand drive one makes it one of the rarest VW's around. It boasts a fully tipping, hydraulic powered pickup bed able to lift 500kg with its single oil pumped ramp, fitted during its restoration in 2015. It also features a set of straightened bumpers and a full roll cage, completely rebuilt front and rear gearboxes, radically stretched arches which had to be enlarged to accommodate the 16" General Grabber tyres. While any and all rusted metalwork was removed and replaced, the leaking original sunroof was replaced with a 42" long roll back sunroof from the USA and an all new brown leather with 'baseball glove' style stitching, plus new headlining and carpets and heated seats were fitted. Once the work was finished, the whole inside and out of the Syncro was finished in Land Rover Corris Grey paint. There is a custom built stainless exhaust system with twin tailpipes and it would be equally at home on the Kings Road or on a Scottish grouse moor
