John Piper (1903-1992) 'DECOR FOR 'DANCING' Inscribed in ink verso 'John Piper, Decor for 'Dancing' Ballet by John Cranko: Music by George Shearing 1952', watercolour 36.5 x 55cm 'Dancing' was first performed at the Kenton Theatre in Henley-on-Thames in July 1952. The delapidated Kenton Theatre had been 'rediscovered' by John Piper who took on the task of redecorating and restoring the theatre fully back to life. Piper recruited John Cranko to stage a show there together with Osbert Lancaster and the production was set in an attic furnished by Piper from bits and pieces he had found in the derelict theatre. Kenneth Macmillan was the lead perfomer and, at the beginning of the performance, he would play different records by the jazz pianist, George Shearing, on a gramophone on the stage. Different members
