Beschreibung:

1988 is the year in which the first World Superbike Championship made its debut. Ducati was there on the starting grid with its new bike 851 ridden by Marco Lucchinelli. Despite the fact that the unreliability of the 851 was a serious drawback, the Ducati - Lucchinelli duo did rather well, winning the first overall title at the very first round of the SBK World Championship held on the British circuit in Donington on April 3, 1988. The Ducati 851 Strada was first produced by Ducati in 1987. It is liquid cooled V-twin with Ducati's revolutionary desmodronic 4 valve head which replaced the 2 valve 900SS engine. When Cagiva bought Ducati the cash influx into development saw Massimo Bordi's university thesis for a liquid cooled 4 valve motorcycle head put into production. Based on the Pantah motor but with liquid cooling and 4 valves per cylinder, the 851 made Ducati once again highly competitive in motorcycle racing. In 1985, Bordi saw his idea produced when, with Cagiva investment, the 851 motor was put into production based upon the Pantah motor and with collaboration with Cosworth. The road going 851 engine produced 93bhp. Ducati was successful racing the 851 with Marco Luccinelli but in 1990 Raymond Roche won the World superbike Championship. The first 851 road bikes were criticsied for handling but that changed in 1988 when the front wheel was enlarged to 17 inches. Together with the owner's toolkit and owners handbook, this bike comes with a rare factory workshop manual with the vendor describing the bike as 9 out of 10 in every respect making this iconic bike a worthy addition to any collection.
