The 911 can trace its roots back to sketches drawn by Ferdinand Porsche in 1959. The Porsche 911 classic was developed as a much more powerful, larger, more comfortable replacement for the Porsche 356, the company's first model. The new car made its public debut at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show and had a non-operational mockup of the 901 engine, receiving a working one in February 1964. It originally was designated as the 'Porsche 901' (901 being its internal project number). 82 cars were built as 901s. However, Peugeot protested on the grounds that in France it had exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. So, instead of selling the new model with another name in France, Porsche generously changed the name to 911. Peugeot's intransigence was Porsche's gain. In 1966 Porsche introduced the more powerful 911S; the engine's power rose to 158hp. Alloy wheels from Fuchs, in a distinctive 5-leaf design, were offered for the first time. In 1967, the Targa version was introduced which had a stainless steel-clad roll bar. The name came from the Targa Florio road race in Sicily, in which Porsche had notable success. The road going Targa was equipped with a removable roof panel and a removable plastic rear window with a fixed glass version offered alongside from 1968 offering the best of open top motoring with the benefit of a weather proof environment for when you arrive in the UK. I don't think anyone is under the allusion that the Porsche 911 was built in small numbers or that, whilst quick, they also tended to be driven gently, so, the trick is to find a good one. Look at the history, inspected the car, even judge the owner. All of these can provide indicators that can point to a car that could, or not, prove expensive to run. There are a number of reason to consider this car. Primarily, it is extremely good order, would it win a concours competition? No, but not by much. There is no corrosion at all in the usual spots; around the battery, front of the car etc. The interior is in good order throughout and the last, but one, owner had a penchant for high quality music reproduction. An amplifier has been discretely positioned under the driver's seat with an Alpine head-end in the dashboard, tweeters in the door and a sub-woofer on the rear parcel shelf. This was not a cheap option, indeed over £3,000 was spent with 'Huets' ensuring it was done professionally. The vinyl removable roof has been replaced with a smart double duck unit and a Thatcham Category One alarm system has also been retro fitted. The comprehensive history has been undertaken by either Porsche main agents or recognised Porsche specialists and includes a recent clutch and service in 2005 as well as regular oil and filter services yearly since. Complete with the correct Porsche owners pack, books, history file and both sets of keys and security fobs, this is an extremely good example.
