1987 Mercedes-Benz 420 SL Roadster Lot Number251 RegistrationD40 GEA Chassis NumberWDB1070472A056811 Engine Number11696422001095 Odometer reading98,000 miles Estimate£16,000 - £18,000 ResultSold - £16,520 Print details Send this to a friend These fabulous and popular models were launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1985,the 420SL convertible retained its predecessor’s long-running Type 107 bodyshell, so really, virtually unchanged. The V8 engined newcomer supplanted the outgoing 380SL model and was produced alongside the outwardly similar 300SL ‘six’. Its power unit was an enlarged, which was applauded as being a great tourer and was an improved version of the existing 3.8 litre overhead cam Type M116 V8. The running gear followed Mercedes-Benz’s established pattern, comprising of independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, while a new five-speed manual gearbox was offered alongside the existing four-speed automatic transmission, although the automatic option was much preferred. A mere 2,148 examples of this luxuriously equipped limited edition model were made between 1985 and 1989. This particular example is presented in arguably the most desirable colour combination of Nautic Blue with grey leather interior and has been in the present ownership since 2006. The car comes with its factory hardtop, ABS, electric windows, cruise control and heated front seats. The car was maintained and serviced by Mercedes-Benz dealers up until 1997 (85,536 miles), the owner still has the maintenance booklet which dates back from the pre-delivery inspection on 29th December 1986. The car has been garaged since 2006 and contained within the history file is an extensive list of work which has been carried out, in this time, by the present owner. A fine example of this fast appreciating classic and with the large V8, makes this iconic luxury sportscar the one to have for those long tours of Europe or the UK.
