1987 MARCH LEYTON HOUSE FORMULA ONE Chassis No. 87 B/01 Engine No. 0015/2817N41 Light blue with sponsors' decals. Engine: V8 Ford Cosworth, DFV 3,000cc, aluminium alloy, Lucas electronic injection, 520bhp; Gearbox: Hewland five speed; Chassis: carbon fibre monocoque; Brakes: AP discs all round; Suspension: front double wishbone, pullrod; rear double wishbone, pushrod. Single seat race car. March returned to Formula One, after an absence of three years, at the 1987 Grand Prix of Brazil in quite spectacular fashion considering they had only announced their plans to re-enter Grand Prix racing in January of that year; the company had secured backing from Leyton House and Mr. Akagi, who through his Japanese Marusho property and leisure concern was already an existing March client for their Formula Two cars. Chassis were designed by Gordon Coppuck, and Ivan Capelli signed up as the No.1 driver for the new team. They were to run in the normally aspirated class and, although no match for the turbocharged cars, they obviously had got the aerodynamics right as they consistently were fastest of the "atmospheric" group. 87 B/01 was first entered in the Brazilian Grand Prix in April 1987. Fitted with a DFZ 3.5 litre engine, it performed well during practice but had engine problems during the warm-up and did not start. A new chassis being available for the San Marino Grand Prix in May, 87 B/01 was taken as a spare car, fitted with the more reliable 3.3 litre engine, and used in practice only. In the Belgian Grand Prix, also in May, 87 B/01 was again taken as a spare car but it did start in the race as the "new" car was not ready. However, the race was red-flagged after one lap only and the "new" car could be made ready for the re-start. This meant the end of 87 B/01 as a team car and at the end of the 1987 season it was eventually sold to Belgian driver Bernard de Dryver who used it in his "Dream Formula One" set-up, allowing paying guests to have a drive in a real Formula One car. Swiss driver Jean-Denis Deletraz took over the Dream Formula One organisation in 1990 and at the end of that same year sold 87 B/01, after it had been completely overhauled, to the present owner, a successful amateur driver. A fresh Cosworth 3 litre DFV engine from Mader was fitted and the carbon fibre brake discs were replaced by conventional steel ones to make the car friendlier to use and to maintain. The car has been little used during recent years and is said to be in excellent working order. It has been based at the "Luc" track in the South of France and looked after by the AGS team of Formula One fame . It is duty paid in Switzerland and comes with spare wheels and new tyres as well as suspension and body parts. This is a rare opportunity to buy a well-engineered and working Formula One car for the price of an engine.
