The designation SL derives from the German 'Sport Leicht' or 'Sport Light' and was first applied to the 300 SL 'Gullwing,' named after the upward-opening doors. The term SL-Class refers to the marketing variations of the vehicle, including the numerous engine configurations spanning five design generations. The R107 took the chassis components of the mid-size W114 model and mated them to the larger engines from the S-Class (W116) and has become a benchmark of quality throughout the years. Over its seventeen year reign, the R107 range was powered by no less than eight different engines - two sizes of straight-six unit and six versions of V8s.
