The Mercedes-Benz SL range of models have been in production for over sixty years metamorphosing from the Le Mans winning W194 of 1952 to the technologically advanced, aluminium bodied supercars we find today at Mercedes-Benz World. One thing however, has not changed over the years - its fundamental character and identity as an upmarket well-built sports car. You could say the fabulous SL AMG model of today with its gull wing doors is the spiritual successor of the 1956 W121 class Gullwing. Backed by its racing pedigree the SL's glamorous reputation was further enhanced by its appearance on TV when it was rare to see an episode of Dallas or Dynasty in the 1980's without the SL making an appearance! These 3rd generation SL's, the R107, looked 'the part' in all their guises - the soft-top up or down or with the Pagoda hard-top in place. The simple to use, almost genius soft-top mechanism when folded down out of sight under a panel gives the car its beautifully sleek, uncluttered appearance. With the hard-top in place you could be forgiven for thinking you were in a fixed head coupé. No less than eight different engine options were available ranging from the straight six 2.8 litre to a mighty 5.6 litre V8. Although a manual gearbox was available, it is very rare and most examples are fitted with an automatic gearbox which best suits the car's designation as a grand tourer. This striking Astral Silver 1984 example presented here boasts the 3.8 litre, V8 engine and an automatic gearbox which provides a more than adequate turn of speed with the low revving V8 engine effortlessly propelling this 'Sport Leicht' along. The contrasting blue/grey interior is described as being in good condition and has the optional rear seat complete with fitted seat belts. The soft top appears to be in excellent condition and was quickly and easily utilised when a rain cloud threatened our photo session - however, the factory hard top also comes with the car should the new owner not wish to risk it …. The history file contains the V5 registration document together with a current MoT test certificate, old MoT test certificates, handbooks, a stamped service book and service receipts; a car cover is also supplied. This SL presents an inexpensive opportunity to own an iconic Mercedes-Benz with the added benefit of being able to join The Official Mercedes-Benz Club which covers all the needs of an SL owner.
