The model lasted until 1980 when it was replaced by the outwardly similar 230CE, the latter benefiting from a new, more powerful short-stroke engine capable of propelling the handsome coupe to 112mph. “Mercedes argue that a well designed ‘four’ can approach the smoothness and refinement of a good small ‘six’, possess superior torque characteristics and consume less fuel – observations we would largely confirm after driving the 230CE,” stated Motor, who found that ‘their’ 230CE was one of the quietest cars ever tested.
