1974 PORSCHE 914 2.0
1974 PORSCHE 914 2.0 Chassis No. 4742903831 Silver with black interior Engine: four cylinder, 1,971cc, 100bhp at 5,000rpm; Gearbox: Porsche five speed manual; Suspension: front, MacPherson telescopic shock strut and wishbone, rear, independent, coil springs; Brakes: discs all round. Left hand drive. The 914 Porsche was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1969 and became available in the US in the Spring of 1970. Priced at just under $3,500 for the four cylinder car, an extra $200 bought the 'appearance group' option which meant a chrome bumper front and rear, as well as chrome-trimmed vinyl covering for the roof pillars. Oddly though, buyers on the West Coast had to pay an extra $100 for the package! The car was built by coachbuilder Karmann in collaboration with Porsche and VW. Initial public reaction was muted, nevertheless sales were steady and reliable, which were attributes of the car itself. Handling was good and with the removable roof (fiberglass) section out, the car promised open-air motoring in safe style. The Porsche engineers themselves confirmed that the handling allowed for better cornering than the 911 equivalent. The flat-four air-cooled engine, with fuel injection on the US models, provided for ample performance and spirited touring. Often praised because of its superior handling to the much-loved 911, this beautifully presented two-liter example of a 914 was acquired by the previous owner from Mr. Trainer of Fairfield, Connecticut. Visually, the car is stunning - it has been treated to a repaint and shows no obvious blemishes or imperfections. The interior is in very fine condition with no tears or signs of wear. Similarly, the engine bay is very well presented throughout. Purchased in the 2006 Christie's Greenwich sale, this 914 has recently been treated to a number of maintenance tasks including a new fuel filter, cleaning of the carburetor, front brake pads and rotors were replaced, as well as rear parking brake calipers and all bulbs. The current owner has decided to sell due to a rapidly growing collection and space constraints. Rarely found in such prime condition, we advise consideration of this highly usable Porsche.
