Beschreibung:

The GT 1300 Junior Zagato was a limited production two-seater coupe with aerodynamic bodywork by Zagato of Milan. The model evoked the earlier, race-oriented Giulietta Sprint Zagatos which featured aluminium bodywork and had a very active competition history. However, the Junior Zagato featured a steel bodyshell with an aluminium bonnet and aluminium doorskins (on the earlier 1300 JZ's). The 1300 JZ was not specifically intended for racing and did not see much use in competition. The 1300 JZ was first seen in public at the Turin Motor Show of 1969. In total 1,117 units were constructed of which two were destroyed during production because the bodyshells were not within specification. The 1300 was based on the floorpan, driveline and suspension of the 1300 Spider. However, the floorpan was shortened behind the rear wheels to fit the bodyshell and an Alfa Montreal fuel tank was fitted. The last 1300 Junior Zagato was produced in 1972 although in 1974 2 more cars were built according to the records. In 1972, the 1600 Zagato came out of which 402 units were produced. In this case the floorpan was unaltered from the 1600 Spider, so that the normal fuel tank could be left in place. As a consequence, the 1600 Zagato is approximately 100mm longer than the 1300 JZ. This can be seen at the back wre the sloping roofline runs further back and the back panel is lower. These Zagato bodied cars typify the skills that came from this particular carrozzeria at the time. Highly advanced with what could be described as a non-conformist approach to automotive design. From the Perspex nose cover showing the row of holes to the left hand side, not for ventilation, but to indicate the serpent represented on the Alfa Romeo badge itself. A throwback to one of the two ruling families from mediaeval Milan. Presented in classic Alfa Romeo red with a contrasting black interior, this extremely original example has been maintained by a marque collector for many years. It is reported to be mechanically sound with only one significant upgrade, the addition of a 1750cc engine in exchange for the conventional 1600cc unit, a popular period modification. With fragile parts like the rear window ventilation motor still working well and the carpets still maintaining their Alfa Romeo monogram, a full 12 month MoT test certificate attests to its reliability. With just 402 made, this rare and exciting sporting Alfa represents extremely good value for money.
