The first-generation Range Rover was produced between 1970 and 1996. The original car was not designed as a luxury-type 4x4; whilst certainly up-market compared to preceding Land Rover models, the early Range Rovers had fairly basic, utilitarian interiors with vinyl seats and plastic dashboards that were designed to be washed down with a hose. Convenience features such as power assisted steering, carpeted floors, air conditioning, cloth/leather seats and wooden interior trim were fitted later in the production run. The Range Rover was a body-on-frame design with a box section ladder type chassis, like the contemporary Series Land Rovers and utilised coil springs as opposed to leaf springs, permanent four-wheel drive, and disc brakes. Power is supplied courtesy of the Rover V8 engine. The Range Rover also served as the base for specialist utility vehicles. These included the Carmichaels International six-wheel Fire Tender, Carmichaels was contracted to supply the modified chassis and the fire-fighting body was supplied and mounted by Gloster-Saro. This example is commonly known as the 'classic' design. In need of restoration, although appearing to be complete, this two-door Range Rover offers the purchaser the opportunity to use the vehicle as a project car or to restore it to its former glory. Prices of early Range Rovers have increased dramatically of late and restoring this one could prove to be a worthwhile exercise.
