Beschreibung:

1971 MERCEDES-BENZ 280 SE 3.5 PILLARLESS COUPÉ Chassis No. 111.026 - 12 - 000325 Engine No. 116.980 -12 - 000 232 Black with grey velour interior Engine: V8 single overhead camshaft, 3499 cc, 230 bhp at 6000 rpm; Gearbox: automatic; Brakes: servo-assisted disc all round; Suspension: independent all round by wishbones and coil springs at front, swing axle at rear, anti-roll bar front and rear. Left hand drive. One of the most exclusive coupes of its time, the 280 SE Mercedes-Benz provided a fascinating combination of great luxury and effortless high performance for up to five fortunate occupants. To create it in 1969, the company took their latest S-Class chassis platform, installed in it a magnificent brand-new overhead camshaft 3.5 litre V8 powerplant, with advanced fuel injection and ignition systems, then clad the result with a svelte two-door bodyshell. The resulting confection, still identified as a '280' despite the 3.5 litre engine, was capable of 127 mph. With power steering, electric windows, automatic transmission and air conditioning, it was equipped to the highest level possible in 1971 and built to exceptionally demanding quality standards. Expensive to manufacture and priced accordingly, the 280 SE fixed-head coupes and cabriolets were always rare and quickly acquired a special prestige that has never deserted them. By the time they gave way in 1971 to new Mercedes-Benz coupes aimed at broader markets, no more than just over 4500 had left the factory, of which 3270 were coupes. The chassis and engine numbers confirm this car to be to original 3.5 litre left hand drive specification, while its speedometer in kilometres suggests that it would originally have been supplied to the home Continental market. Today, it is fitted with a more modern stereo system and aftermarket air-conditioning, but also has a sunroof, which appears to be an original fitting. The 3.5 Coupé has resided in the present collection ownership for more than a decade, during which time it has remained unused throughout. Cosmetically it is in good overall condition, the paintwork at some stage having been refurbished, and the original interior showing only minor wear. Mechanically, Christie's has not checked or run the Mercedes and so would advise careful re-commissioning be carried out by a marque specialist prior to use.
