George Barris is rightfully known as the “King of the Kustomizers.” With his brother Sam, he began modifying cars in their native Chicago before World War II. After the war, they set up shop in Los Angeles, building “kustom kars” for private customers. By 1950, their fame had spread, and the movie industry came calling. Their first movie car was built for that year’s film “High School Confidential.” By the 1960s, Sam had left and the firm, eventually called Barris Kustom Industries, was doing work for television. Among the well-known Barris vehicles are the Munster Coach, the Oldsmobile truck used in the “Beverly Hillbillies,” the “General Lee” Dodge Charger from “The Dukes of Hazzard,” the Ford Torino of “Starsky and Hutch,” and vehicles for “Knight Rider,” “Power Rangers” and “Banacek.” Some time in the 1970s, George Barris built this runabout for singer Elton John. Intended for elegant stage entrances, it was constructed on an electric golf cart chassis, and dressed up with a giant bow tie, a seat stylized like a grand piano, and star-shaped spectacle “windshields.” It was sold in 1983 at Barris’s dispersal auction and subsequently displayed in a Cars of the Stars exhibition in Cannes. Purchased by the current owner about three years ago, it is presently in poor condition and in need of a thorough reconditioning and restoration.
