Gordon William Mills (15 May 1935 - 29 July 1986) was a successful London-based music industry manager and songwriter. Born in Madras, British India, Mills grew up in Trealaw in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales. At aged fifteen, Mills joined his first group doing local gigs in pubs and clubs around South Wales. At seventeen, he was called up for National Service and entertained his fellow recruits during this period with his musical talents. When de-mobbed, Mills entered a music competition, coming second. This subsequently led to him being asked to join Morton Fraser Harmonica Gang where he began his association with Don Paul and Ronnie Wells, later forming the group, The Viscounts. The group was successful with the chart songs 'Who Put The Bomp' and 'Shortin Bread'. Mills became a hit song writer with early works for Cliff Richard and Jonny Kidd. Later, his own Album 'Do It Yourself' was packaged, recorded, and sadly never released. His later career involved management as well as song writing. Not once, but three times he proved his ability to turn seemingly undiscovered singers' into pop-stars, as he guided Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck and Gilbert O'Sullivan to international stardom whilst also co-writing with Tom Jones 'It's Not Unusual'. This famous song was re-released in 1987 putting Tom Jones back into the pop charts but sadly, only after Mills had died of stomach cancer a year earlier. We are delighted to offer this Rolls-Royce Mulliner Park Ward Drophead Coupé that was first owned and registered to Gordon William Mills Originally supplied in Porcelain White with contrasting Bridge of Weir piped dark red leather and black hood, this remains in a similar colour combination today. The interior has been completely re-trimmed although it is not certain that the coachwork has been re-finished in the original colour. Everything appears to be in excellent order, perhaps, somewhat due to this example having spent a large part of its life in Southern California. The coachwork is exemplary for a Rolls-Royce of its age. The wood trimmings and leather are unmarked whilst it is evident that the lined hood has been replaced to a high standard in recent times. The history file contains the 'Lubrication and Maintenance' chart, Roll-Royce & Bentley sales/service book and most importantly, the operation and maintenance manual that is annotated, in the personal memoranda section, as being first owned by Gordon Mills, Weybridge and denoting the registration number as TJB 1G. Further items within the file include a US Certificate of Title, various invoices and a note from the Rolls-Royce and Bentley Enthusiasts Club, records administrator also stating the first owner as Gordon Williams Mills. At a recent test, it started and drove easily with all the instruments reading correctly and, in particular, the oil pressure gauge running at the correct level demonstrating that the oil pressure regulator was operating as it should. This UK supplied righthand drive Rolls-Royce comes complete with an MoT test certificate, valid until May 2017 and a UK V5 vehicle registration document. An internet search under Gordon Mills will find a picture of this Roll-Royce along side three others. Sitting astride the mascots of their individual motor cars are, Tom Jones, Gordon Mills and Engelbert Humperdinck. With his success, Mills was known as 'Mills Man of Music' and was regarded, at the time, as one of the world's most successful and well known music managers in the business. What better to spend your time than cruising in this fine Rolls-Royce with the hood down and remembering the music of a bygone period.
