Right hand drive. Mercedes-Benz has long understood that the alert high performance automobile manufacturer matures in step with the clientele. In the 1960s the company observed that the wealthy sports-car buyer of the fifties who once purchased the 300Sc and 300 SL high performance models had matured, to become a sedate, practical purchaser who sought a large grand touring car with plenty of room for up to five in the luxurious cabin, a capacious luggage boot, providing top speed and acceleration fully loaded equal to anything on the road. Their response was to take the up-to-date bodyshell of the 220 series introduced at the 1959 Frankfurt Motor Show and install in it the well developed three-litre fuel injected straight six engine of the 300SL series. Power went up to 170bhp with a raised compression ratio and yet more sophisticated fuel injection equipement. With a top speed of close to 120mph in security and silence, set off by an interior of the greatest luxury, the imposing 300SE was one of the outstanding grand tourers of its time. Produced in relatively limited numbers, the type soon became of interest to collectors. The car is finished in black with black leather interior and it is presented in very good condition overall.
