The last of a popular and extremely successful line begun with the 230SL of 1963, the Mercedes-Benz 280SL was introduced in 1967. Although similar in basic architecture to that of the preceding 250SL, the 280's overhead-camshaft six-cylinder engine was entirely new. Maximum power of the fuel-injected unit increased from 150 to 180bhp, and while the 280's 120mph top speed was no greater, it was significantly quicker off the mark than the 250. Otherwise the 280 remained mechanically virtually identical to its predecessor, with independent suspension all round and four-wheel disc brakes. Christened 'pagoda top' after their distinctive cabin shape, these SL models were amongst the best-loved sports-tourers of their day. Finished in silver with original blue leather interior, this righthand-drive example comes with service invoices for the period 1981-1995, during which time a single owner spent in excess of £15,000 on refurbishment including the installation of a new (unleaded-compatible) engine and new hood. The present owner acquired the vehicle in 2000, since when a catalytic converter and new radiator have been fitted, and reports that it runs well and has proven reliable. Kept garaged while in present ownership, the car is described as fundamentally sound but in need of some relatively minor refurbishment to realise its full potential. An automatic transmission model equipped with immobiliser, it is offered with current road fund licence, MoT to April 2004 and Swansea V5.
