The 230SL 'Pagoda' was a stunning Paul Bracq designed two-seat convertible that followed Mercedes' new design language, featuring crisp lines and upright headlights. To save on weight, the hood, door skins, trunk lid, and tonneau cover were all composed of aluminum. The nickname 'Pagoda' was quickly adopted thanks to the slightly concave roof on the optional removable hardtop that resembled a pagoda roof. In 1967, Mercedes introduced the third and final iteration of the 'Pagoda', the 280SL, and it then became apparent that some cars don't change, they just get better. The 280 featured the same modified W111 chassis with a rear swing axle and independent front suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Power came from a 2.8-liter version of Mercedes' robust inline-six and used Bosch fuel injection. A charming model with capable handling and braking thanks to its suspension and all-wheel disc brakes. These roadsters also have one of the most beautiful bodies produced in the 1960s. Thanks to their robust inline-six and their luxurious Mercedes interior, they are wonderful cars to be driven and enjoyed. We are delighted to offer this UK registered European specification 280 SL that was delivered new to Greece. The Pagoda's coachwork looks very smart, resplendent in red with a tan hide interior. The car has benefitted from a full restoration, stripped back to its bare shell and bare metal and finished to a very high standard. The interior sports complete new upholstery including the headlining on the hard top and all wood has been refurbished along with the steering wheel. The interior also boasts the third rear seat making this already practical car even more usable. Occupants also have the benefit of a new stereo with the old unit available. The gearbox was rebuilt and the steering box reconditioned. The brakes are all new and the front and rear suspension have been overhauled and all new rubbers from the suspension through to door seals and windows have been replaced. New tyres sit on each corner. This Mercedes-Benz Pagoda, being the more desirable and powerful 280 model with its larger capacity engine and seven bearing crankshaft, benefits from a current MoT test certificate valid until October 2017 and is complete with both its soft and hard tops.
