The similarly styled, but mechanically unrelated, 190 followed in 1955, completing the first generation of cars. Their successor was the W113 series SL which proved to be more comfortable than the former and faster than the latter. The 250 SL is the rarest of all the SL's as they were only made for one year. It was developed under the auspices of Mercedes-Benz Technical Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling Friedrich Geiger. The lead designers devised its distinctive, patented, slightly concave hardtop which inspired the 'Pagoda' nickname. All models were equipped with an inline-six cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection. The bonnet, boot lid, door skins and tonneau cover were made of aluminium to reduce weight. The comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful brakes and radial tyres gave the W113 superb handling for its time. Although often overshadowed by the 280 SL, the 2.3 litre engine runs on four crankshaft main bearings instead of seven, resulting in a more free revving power source with greater versatility. A comprehensive history file is important when acquiring a classic car and this 250 SL will not be found wanting. All fully documented, this example has been fully stripped in 2012 and painted using the rotisserie method. The engine, gearbox, rear axle and injectors have been re-built by one of the best in the business, SS Motors in Weybridge. The interior is also as new finished, as it is, in the correct ‘Bamboo’ leather and ‘Wheat’ carpets with a brand new mohair soft-top included. Recent servicing, also by SS Motors, took place in May, 2017 and includes four new tyres as well as new brake discs and pads. There are many good Pagodas on the market but this has been restored extremely well and, importantly, is regularly used by the vendor. For example, whilst the mileage at the top reads 34,111, he is going to Italy with his partner prior to the sale. To be able to boast that hand-on-heart sort of reliability is a rare commodity indeed. A detailed history, well prepared and very usable indeed, this is what makes classic car ownership a pleasure.
