Commission no. 002797 Originally conceived by [Sir] Alec Issigonis as a further use of the innovative Mini drivetrain, the Mini Moke was proposed as a lightweight military vehicle for off-road and airborne assault use. The light weight, efficient use of space, versatility and reliability of the Moke (an archaic term for donkey) was not enough to overcome the low ground clearance and small wheels and tires inherent in the Mini's mechanical layout. Austin cast about for other possible uses, introducing the Moke in the UK in 1964 as a simple, reliable, inexpensive utility and agricultural vehicle. The British taxing authorities interrupted BMC's plans by categorizing the utilitarian Moke as a passenger car subject to much higher taxes. The Moke found its market offshore where its light weight and spare body made it an ideal beach wagon and tender for yachts of all sizes. Popularized in the television series The Prisoner, the Moke took on a pop culture persona in the Sixties and Seventies. Over the years it has also proved to be eminently practical with racers as a pit car and local runabout. With its manual transmission and light weight the Moke can be towed easily and has little effect on the mileage of a transporter or motor home. That's the configuration of Mike Amalfitano's 1967 Austin Mini Moke. Built in BMC's UK factory, it is an original lefthand drive Moke intended for export. Power is from the standard Mini single carburetor engine and it is finished, as many Mokes have been, in brilliant colors, bright red with tan vinyl upholstered seats and a black plastic top. It is an early production example with a single windshield wiper and floor-mounted headlight dimmer switch. For enjoyment it has been fitted with a stereo system and has a heater, a somewhat superfluous accoutrement in view of its generous open sides without curtains. Road registered, it has a pair of rear view mirrors for safety and a tow bar that hooks up to a standard tow ball on a transporter or motor home. As practical as it is appealing, it has been maintained, as all of the Amalfi Racing cars have been, in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. Without reserve
