The final "big Healey" 3000 Mk III of 1967 fully retained the essence of its curvaceous long hood/short deck progenitor, the Austin-Healey 100/4 sports convertible of 1953. Designed as a sports car and indeed quite successful in rallying and racing, the Austin- Healey had by the mid-1960s evolved into the fully civilized 3000 Mk III. Equipped with roll-up side windows, this 2+2 tourer was quite enjoyable for daily driving - while its 2,912cc 150hp twin-carb six-cylinder engine and four-speed manual overdrive transmission provided performance worthy of its sporting heritage. Shortly after the Mk III was introduced in 1964, "Phase II" upgrades were added that would further enhance the ride and handling of all subsequent Mk III BJ8 series chassis through 1967. This Big Healey has resided alongside the many Italian automobiles and handful of British classics in this collection for more than 20 years, having been bought from Cooper Classics in September 1989. After two years, the owners decided to have the completely refurbished to 'triple black' specification of paintwork, interior and top. This work was carried out through 1991 and 1992 and was completed by Born Again Classic of Ronkonkoma, NY. Approaching 20 years on from this rebuild and with 5,000 miles covered since, it now shows a few signs of age and wear, with small stone chips to the body in places. Still one of the most popular British sportscars on the road in America, this attractively liveried version of the definitive 3000 would make enjoyable summer transport.
