Produced between 1961 and 1967, the Triumph TR4 combined a new, modern and aggressive body design by famed Italian stylist, Giovanni Michelotti, with the basic chassis of the previous TR3A. The TR4 also improved passenger comfort with wind-up windows, face-level ventilation and an optional hardtop. The 2138cc engine of the late-production TR3A continued while the 1991cc engine was also made available to buyers who wanted to participate in two-litre racing. When equipped with the optional overdrive, the TR4 was good for a top speed of almost 110mph. The TR4A debuted in 1965 and introduced an all-new independent rear suspension system (IRS), which provided exceptional rear-wheel camber control with excellent wheel travel while softer springs improved the ride quality. Some 28,465 TR4A roadsters were produced between 1965 and August 1967 and of those, 75% were equipped with the new IRS including the car offered here today. At the Sebring 12 Hours in 1966, ample proof of the validity of the IRS was provided when three IRS-equipped TR4As achieved a remarkable 1-2-3 class victory. Today, the four-cylinder TR's are among the easiest of post-war classic sports cars to own and maintain being supported by a multitude of component suppliers and other specialists. This Triumph TR4A IRS with overdrive was the subject of a complete ground-up restoration in the 1980's and has undergone a repaint this year and finished in Old English White with black interior and new black carpets. This car has been fully maintained since the restoration and parts re-restored when necessary; the bumpers were re-chromed two years ago and recently the cylinder head was removed and the valve springs replaced. The ignition system has been updated with electronic ignition; a new radiator and a Kenlow cooling fan have also been fitted within the last twelve months. This TR4A is supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires February 2013, a file containing a photographic record of the 1980's restoration, invoices, old MoT test certificates and a handbook. For the new owner, this represents an opportunity to step straight into a very usable classic car with the option to enter classic car rallies both in the United Kingdom and on the Continent.
