A ‘modern classic’ if ever there was one, Porsche’s long-running 911 arrived in 1964, replacing the 356. The latter’s rear-engined layout was retained, but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell and dropped the 356’s VW-based suspension in favour of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. In its first incarnation, Porsche’s single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat ‘six’ displaced 1,991cc and produced 130bhp; progressively enlarged and developed, it would eventually grow to more than 3 litres and, in turbo-charged form, put out well over 300 horsepower. This left-hand drive 911 was originally supplied to Porsche Cars Southwest Inc, San Antonio, Texas in March 1965. Imported into the UK from Phoenix, Arizona, the car was converted to rally specification in 1993 for Brian Goff by respected marque specialist Francis Tuthill and Gantspeed, and sold in 1999 to Geoff Crabtree, who successfully rallied it on tarmac in Ireland, Belgium, Holland and France. Offered with FIA papers confirming its Class 4 Special GT (GTS) specification, the car is stated to weigh 1,0l6kgs and is powered by a dry-sumped 2-litre ‘six’ breathing via Solex 40PI carburettors. Dual circuit braking and a close ratio 5-speed gearbox are among other noteworthy features. Work carried out in 1993 consisted of fitting a new CDS roll-cage, sump guards and anti-roll bar, in addition to lightened doors, bonnet and engine cover. In 1996 the car was totally stripped, the bodyshell being repaired and strengthened by Gantspeed before being re-sprayed in yellow, while the electrics were re-wired in 1997. The vendor purchased the car in 2002, using it to compete in the Tour Auto and Tour Espana, Modena and Mallorca. It was rebuilt again two years ago to the latest FIA specification. Offered with sundry invoices, current MoT certificate and Swansea V5 registration document, this lightened car represents an opportunity to enter historic rallying with one of the all-time greats.
