We all dream of finding that elusive motor car hidden away in a garage for 30 years or more. Imagine opening door to that garage and seeing a dust covered time warp straight six Alfa Romeo …. well shh; you'd better keep this one to yourself because you've found that car here today. Launched in Geneva in 1962, the 106 Series 2600 Sprint boasted an in line straight six twin cam engine that produced over 145 bhp. This was one of Giorgetto Giugiaro's first designs and despite, and don't be fooled by, the distinctive sports car looks, this is a true continent eating grand tourer in every respect. With four seats, disc brakes on all four wheels and a five speed gearbox this was and still is a fast road eating cruiser. Manufactured on the 22 nd October 1965 this car was supplied in the UK by Thompson and Taylor in right hand drive form. Owned by a tea trader from new (see letter in history file) he is believed to have owned only five cars in total and was never a person to sell one; in fact, on his death all five cars he'd purchased during his life were discovered. Family friends still recall him driving the Alfa Romeo around Hove in East Sussex in the 1960's and 1970's. Being a tea trader meant several trips abroad and on his return after one such trip he purchased a Mercedes-Benz SL and thereafter the Alfa Romeo sat, unused, in dry storage within a coach house until recently discovered. On its discovery this Alfa Romeo was found to be in amazingly original condition and significantly with only just over 5000 recorded miles on the clock (believed genuine due to the history and the condition). Since being found, a program of sympathetic re-commissioning has been carried out. The bodywork was in very good order but the paint had suffered in storage so a bare metal repaint has been carried out (photographic record is within the history file). Further works include; overhauled braking system with new calipers, wheels powder coated to the correct colour, new tyres, bright work re-chromed, badges replaced and supplied from the original manufacturers, rear lights re-furbished, various detail items powder coated, carburettors rebuilt, new mild steel exhaust system fitted, fuel tank flushed with new fuel lines fitted and the engine was stripped and found to be virtually as new with no works required and reassembled. In addition, the original Carrello headlights have been kept with the car but modern halogen units have been fitted for safer night use. The interior is as original and really feels so. Seat belts were fitted in the early 1970's and still retain the British Standard tag. There is even a 1970's service footwell carpet protection paper mat, and a full tool box, jack, wheel brace, owner's manual, service brochures and period touring maps are also supplied with the car. Inside the boot compartment the original Alfa Romeo scripted mat and other trim is all in excellent condition. Take a step back from this 2600 and see how straight the panel work is; restorers would die to be able to achieve these panel gaps as they can usually only be seen on original non restored cars such as this. Look inside that bonnet with its original soundproofing intact and the detailed labelling on the components. Sit inside and absorb the aroma of the leather and feel the originality. You may feel as though you have stepped back in time. Having languished for so long without being used on the road, the original registration number and document has been filtered back into the DVLA system. The original registration has been applied for from DVLA and hopefully by the time of this sale would have been obtained along with a new MOT certificate.
