Description The Fiat 2300 Coupé was first exhibited as a Sergio Sartorelli design concept on Carrozzeria Ghia’s stand at the 1960 Turin Motor Show. It was originally Ghia’s intention to build the 2300 in house; however, construction was actually carried out by OSI as Ghia was unable to supply the volumes planned for production. The model used the Fiat 2300 saloon floor pan, with engine tuning and modifications by Carlo Abarth for the more powerful 2300S. The six-cylinder 2,279cc power unit was the work of former Ferrari engine designer, Aurelio Lampredi. For the 2300S, Abarth increased the compression ratio and fitted a ‘hotter’ camshaft and two twin-choke Weber carburettors, in which form the engine produced 136bhp. Other technological improvements included the adoption of four-wheel disc brakes. When launched, the Fiat 2300S was one of the fastest and most attractive GT’s of its day, outperforming the Lancia Flaminia and the Alfa Romeo 2600. For competition purposes, Abarth bored out the block from 2,279cc to 2,323cc, fitted three Weber 40 DCOE twin-choke carburettors, increased the compression ratio, and fitted a multi-branch exhaust system. The result of these modifications was an increase in power to some 210bhp and a corresponding increase in top speed to over 130mph. For 1963, Abarth took the model a stage further, developing three competition coupés that competed that season. The most notable was that driven by Paul Frère and Lucien Bianchi, which achieved a class win and 2nd place overall at the Nürburgring 12-Hour race. Another 2300S driven by Rudi Golderner and Karl von Kothen finished in 9th place overall, and in the same year placed 12th overall in the Tour de France. Rare to find and original red 1964 Fiat 2300 S Coupe Abarth. With a beautiful black interior with a nice patina. Power comes from the more powerful matching “Abarth” tuned 6 cylinder in line engine type 114B006 equipped with double twin choke Weber 38DCOE carburetors producing 136 hp. Attached to a 4 speed all synchromesh manual gearbox. The Fiat 2300 range included this Ghia designed grand tourer. Having developed the coupé body Ghia lacked the production capacity needed for the volumes and were obliged to subcontract its production to OSI. Inside the 2300 coupe featured power operated windows, a beautiful and original Nardi steering wheel and numerous clocks and other luxury fittings. This particular car is very sound, being an older restoration which still presents well. The motor, to S-specification with twin Weber carburettors, is very strong and revs freely, gearbox is smooth and the disc brakes effective. The 2300S has spent quite some time in the south of France, in the Var department of the St. Tropez area. This gentleman’s coupe, with room for four passengers, and a large luggage room, is very pleasant for long distance touring. Fun to drive, a Fiat 2300 S would be a delightful, charming, and powerful addition to any collection. Finished in a very attractive combination of Fiat Rosso with a Nero interior, this is a nice example of a very stylish and interesting GT car of the 1960’s.
