Launched at the New York Motor Show in March 1959, the Austin-Healey 3000 retained the muscular good looks of its 100/6 predecessor while providing a useful increase in performance thanks to an enlarged (3.0-liter) version of the long-established C-Series engine. Otherwise, the car remained much as before, though Girling front disc brakes were a welcome improvement. Introduced in 1961, the MkII in Convertible form brought improved practicality courtesy of a fixed foldaway top and winding windows, and from now until the end of production the only model available would be the ‘2+2’, the less popular two-seater having been dropped. The more powerful (148bhp) MkIII appeared early in 1964, to be followed later in the year by the Phase II version with revised rear suspension. Top speed was now 121mph and the 0-60mph time dipped below 10 seconds. Despite the antiquity of the basic design, the ‘Big Healey’ remained as popular as ever with sports car enthusiasts, though increasingly stringent safety and emissions legislation meant that its days, sadly, were numbered. Sold new in the USA, this left-hand drive Austin-Healey 3000 was treated to a full, body-off restoration completed in June 1988 by Tom Kovacs of Fourintune in Cedarburg, WI who had purchased it as a restoration project. Always kept garaged and well cared for, the car has enjoyed two owners post-Kovacs (the current since June 2006) and covered only 6,000-or-so miles since completion. The vendor has recently completed a thorough detailing of the vehicle including paintwork, trim, under-pinnings, interior, wheels and engine bay (belts, hoses, etc). In addition, the carburetors have been overhauled and the engine tuned, and both the braking and suspension systems serviced. Parts replaced include the windshield and seal, rear road springs, brake servo, exhaust system (with a stainless steel unit) and numerous minor items. Finished in classic Colorado Red livery with black interior, this car boasts a number of highly desirable features including four-speed manual/overdrive transmission, chromed wire wheels and luggage rack. It is offered complete with owner’s manual, spare wheel, knock-off hammer, assorted service invoices and State of California Certificate of Title, and is expected to possess a BMIHT build certificate by time of sale.
