Left hand drive First presented to the public during the motor show season in late 1959, the Rolls-Royce Phantom V succeeded both the Phantom IV and the Silver Wraith as the longest chassis offered and the one most suitable for fitting with a capacious, seven passenger limousine body. The potential buyer was offered a only limited choice of bespoke coachwork as, by the late fifties, most of the independent coachbuilding houses had closed their doors. However, at the time of the launch, cars were exhibited by Messrs, Hoopers, H.J. Mulliner, James Young and the Rolls-Royce subsidiary, Park Ward. The car was based on the mechanical running gear of the Silver Cloud II, using its light-alloy V8 engine and Hydramatic automatic transmission. Its wheelbase was lengthened by 22 inches in order to afford the room 'royals' were accustomed to. Phantom Vs were purchased by a very distinguished list of customers including the Royal Family in England, Heads of State, Embassies and individuals such as Pierre Cartier and Bill Harrah. The example offered was built by Park Ward, to their design number 980, and was ordered by Ms. Catherine Gaisman for U.S. delivery, which was effected in February 1962. It is particularly rare to find a left hand drive example. The indicated mileage shown is just over 45,000, and it is believed that this is an accurate record. It was acquired some years ago by a prominent Rolls-Royce collector in Southern California when the mileage was showing 42,000. During its present ownership it has received the best care as would befit a car of this caliber. Mechanically it is in fully operational condition and we are told, requires nothing doing to it. The car was repainted some seven or eight years ago, in its original color, and is in superb, if not concours condition. The beautiful interior is virtually unmarked and can be described as excellent throughout. Most of these cars, after sale by the first owner, saw service as livery limousines or as corporate shuttle vehicles. This particluar car was saved from that fate and has always had private owners who treated it with appropriate loving care.
